The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a highly competitive international postgraduate scholarship programme at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. It supports outstanding applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue eligible full-time postgraduate study at Cambridge. The scholarship is designed for applicants who combine exceptional academic ability with a clear capacity for leadership, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and a strong intellectual and academic fit with their proposed course at Cambridge. The scholarship can be used for a wide range of postgraduate programmes offered by the University of Cambridge, subject to the specific eligibility rules of the scholarship and the admission requirements of the chosen course. It is not a general undergraduate scholarship and should not be confused with Cambridge's wider postgraduate funding system. Gates Cambridge is a full-cost scholarship. Its core funding covers the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate and provides a maintenance allowance for the scholar. Additional funding may be available for certain necessary academic and personal circumstances, subject to the scholarship's conditions. Applicants must first identify an eligible Cambridge postgraduate course and satisfy the University's academic and application requirements. The Gates Cambridge funding application is integrated into the Cambridge postgraduate application process for eligible applicants, although additional Gates Cambridge information and an additional reference are required. The selection process is exceptionally competitive. Academic excellence alone is not sufficient: applicants should be able to demonstrate why their proposed course is an appropriate intellectual fit, how they have demonstrated leadership or influence, and how their work, values or future plans show a genuine commitment to improving the lives of others. Applicants should begin preparing well before the application cycle. Cambridge recommends researching funding at least a year before the intended start of a course. Applicants should identify their course, review its admission requirements and deadline, investigate funding, prepare supporting documents and references, and submit a complete application by the applicable deadline. A crucial point for applicants is that there is not one universal Cambridge postgraduate application deadline. The relevant deadline depends on the course and funding route. When applying for funding, the applicant must meet whichever applicable deadline is earlier. The University of Cambridge also makes clear that applications must be complete by the relevant deadline, including required supporting documentation and references. Missing a funding deadline can result in the applicant not being considered for the relevant funding award. Gates Cambridge should therefore be approached as both an academic admission application and a scholarship application. A strong applicant needs a credible academic case for Cambridge as well as a convincing explanation of leadership, social impact and the relationship between the proposed study and their longer-term contribution.
